AMD Greenland to be Known as Vega10; Other Star Names Coming In
For some time we have known the next generation flagship GPU of AMD with the codename AMD Greenland, however, we have now picked up word that the company has been calling it Vega10 for some time internally.
The decision to rename the upcoming GPU has been taken on the basis of a new strategy under which they will be grouping their products with names of galaxies and stars. This is something that Raja Koduri, the Radeon Technologies Group boss, said while talking about their future plans.
We have some exciting hardware announcements as well. This is designed for FinFET. Our guiding principle for the Polaris architecture was power efficiency. We have the new naming scheme for our architectures. It’ll be based on galaxies, star systems, and stars. You’ll see more of this coming in the future. Polaris is the beginning of our journey through space.
However, Koduri has clarified that the brand name Radeon is still going to stay the same (on the boxes) because that is an architecture code name.
It is also being said that just like Greenland has been named Vega10, Polaris was the name given to the architecture that was previously code named Arctic Islands.
According to Koduri, AMD plans to continue naming their future GPU models in the same way.
In parallel news, the AMD Greenland GPUs aka Vega10 are expected to debut in summers this year but this is yet to be confirmed by the official sources.
