MSI Introduces CPU Guard 1151 To Protect Against Skylake Processors Bending Issue
Earlier this month, some controversial new information came to light regarding Intel’s latest Skylake processors. According to sources, these new processor chips, due to their thin design, were bending under pressure when used with aftermarket CPU coolers. As expected, many companies responded to these claims defending their products while some also introduced new clamps or work arounds to safeguard against such issues in the future.
MSI is the latest company to respond to these reports now and they have introduced a new product called CPU Guard 1151. As the name suggests, it is designed for LGA 1151 socket used by Skylake processors and what it does strengthen the processor socket on the motherboard. The CPU Guard 1151 is sort of a frame that is placed around the processor socket allowing it withstand more vertical pressure.
While MSI claimed in its press release that this new technology “was used during an overclocking event, helping top overclockers push their Skylake CPU to the max, breaking world records,” there isn’t any substantial information provided about the product just yet.
The CPU Guard 1151 can be used for all 6th generation processors including Xeon E3 v5, Core series as well as Pentium and Celeron processors. However, it’s not clear whether it can only be used in conjunction with specific aftermarket coolers or will work with all of them because as the earlier reports suggested, only a few heavy mount coolers (some of which involve waterblocks) are causing processors to bend under pressure.
