ASRock Updates Existing Z170 Motherboards To Allow Skylake Overclocking On Locked Processors
Following reports that non-K/locked processors of Intel’s latest Skylake CPU series might be overclockable, ASRock has now launched a new feature for their motherboards named SKY OC that provides users with the option to do just the thing. The SKY OC not only provides overclocking capability to locked Skylake processors but also achieve really high speeds.
SKY OC is available on all ASRock Z170 chipset based Skylake compatible motherboards and can be activated by simply downloading the latest BIOS update available on the official support website.
After the BIOS update has been installed, users will be able to adjust their BCLK in order to achieve speeds higher than stock and according to ASROCK, even as high as 60% in the case of Core i5 6400 which is a massive boost in performance, somewhat removing the need to spend extra on K model processors.
There is however a downside, or at least for some users it might be. After activating SKY OC and overclocking non-K processors, both Turbo Boost and C-State will stop working as long as SKY OC is enabled. The built-in Intel GPU will also be disabled while the CPU is overclocked so users will need to use a discrete graphics card.
