Apple Has Been Secretly Building Its Own Graphics Chip for Several Years
Apple’s A-branded processors have been the centre of attention for over the past few years thanks to their incredible clock speeds. Especially the latest A9X chipset which is revealed to have 12-core GPU and high bandwidth memory delivering a significant performance boost.
As if that is not enough, the Cupertino giant might be working on its own in-house graphics chip for quite some time. Apple has been working quietly behind the scenes on the project for a few years now, reveals a report from Fudzilla.
Well the move does make sense considering Apple has already announced its first in-house developed ARM based CPU cores, and developing its own GPU would just be a continuation of the tradition. Having a home grown GPU would help the iPhone maker reduce its dependency on Imagination Technologies, a company that manufactures various PowerVR graphics chips for Apple – and in turn, clench its grip on the phone and tablet market.
While there’s no second opinion over the resources Apple requires to develop a mobile GPU from the ground up, designing your own GPU is not an easy endeavor, and it might take even years before we could see Apple ready to push its own graphics chip on the consumer market.
