Xperia Overlay Brings Android Lollipop to Older Sony Xperia Devices
If you’re a Sony Xperia device user then you may already be familiar with Xperia Overlay. However, if you have yet to hear of it, here’s what you need to know. Xperia Overlay is a custom Android firmware designed for Xperia range of older smartphones, mainly 2011 and 2012 models, to bring them altered versions of current firmware.
Well, the Overlay team is at it again, this time bringing the Android Lollipop update to a number of Xperia devices. The newest update, version 3.1 is based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop, and is released for Sony Xperia S, SL, Acro S, and Ion. The Ion is set to receive a stable Cyanogenmod 12 build thanks to some fixes issued by the Xperia Overlay team.
The team will expand the list of supported devices in the coming months, adding the Xperia SP, P, U, Sola, T, TL, TX, V, M and L. For other devices including Sony Xperia Arc, Arc S, Neo, Neo V, Neo L, Pro, Ray and the famous Xperia Play, the software will however remain stuck to version 2.1 based on KitKat 4.4.4.
In addition to bringing the latest Xperia features and Lollipop perks, the update has tons of bugfixes and optimizations under its hood. Here’s an overview of the key features included:
- CPU and GPU optimizations to help bring newer games on board,
- Super Stamina and Ultra Stamina Mode to boost battery life,
- Integrated proprietary ClearAudio tech for perfect sound,
- Support for DLNA and Miracast, and
- Playstation compatibility for allowing users to play Playstation Certified titles.
