FPGA Based DTV Product Spotted In AMD Shipment
The entry lists the project as Magnum and mentions an FPGA prototype board. The complete entry reads “PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD ASSEMBLY-AMD MAGNUM FPGA PROTOTYPEBOARD FOR DTV P/N .102-B25432-00 (FOC).”
So what’s the interesting thing here? Well the fact that it mentions Digital Television (DTV), a division that AMD sold to Broadcom back in 2008. Not a whole lot of info is available regarding this Magnum product besides the fact that it seems like a high end product due to its suggested pricing.
Since DTV seems to suggest it has something to do with home entertainment, it is possible that AMD could be looking to launch some sort of a device to rival Nvidia Shield, which would certainly explain the high price tag.
As for the FPGA board, they have been previously spotted, involved with AMD’s upcoming APUs based on the Zen architecture. The boards and their reconfigurable logic fabric would mean the product could have a lot of value and application in the market.
Since AMD already announced earlier they are looking to shake things up in order to improve their position in the market, this could be just one of the stepping stones to help them achieve that position.
