MSI Announces GS40 Phantom Gaming Notebook
MSI seems to be on a roll these days, launches one powerhouse gaming notebook hot on the heels of another without showing any signs of stopping. Not only that but these machines aren’t hulking monstrosities of the past, when you wouldn’t even consider a gaming notebook simply because of how much it would weigh. The recent machine to join their gaming lineup is the GS40 Phantom.
The Phantom is equipped with a GeForce GTX 970M graphics card with 3GB of VRAM into a machine that is less than an inch thick and only weighs around 3.5 pounds. The laptop has a 14 inch screen capable of IPS-level 1080p display.
The stock version of GS40 is powered by an Intel Core i7 6700HQ with a base clock of 2.6GHz and turbo of up to 3.5GHz. MSI also has plans to release another variant with an overclockable i7 6820HK processor.
There is no stock RAM option for the notebook but it supports up to 32GB of DDR4 2133MHz modules. There is no fixed detail on the storage specifications as of yet but it is confirmed that the notebook has room for a 2.5” drive plus a M.2 slot with four lanes of PCIe Gen3 connectivity.
Perhaps the most exciting feature in the GS40 Phantom is the new MSI Super Port, essentially a USB Type-C connector that can handle USB 3.1 peripherals, 4K display output and can also provide enough juice to charge devices at a high speed. The GS40 also comes with a SteelSeries RGB LED-backlit keyboard, Dynaudio sound, an ESS Sabre DAC, and Killer DoubleShot wired and wireless networking.
According to a reseller, the laptop with 16GB of RAM, 128GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive costs $1,599.
