Amazon Launches Its Etsy Rival Called ‘Handmade’
Amazon, probably the biggest retail giant in the world, has started a new website that will exclusively deal in handmade products. The new marketplace, called Handmade at Amazon, is launched as a killer for Etsy – a similar platform that deals in handcrafted-goods.
Initially, the website will feature 80,000 items to start with from 50 states and 60 countries. Jodi Kostelnik, who creates screen-printed tea towels in her Washington, D.C., studio said:
When I got a call from Amazon last spring, I couldn’t believe it. They came and filmed me printing and helped me put together the packaging.
Jodi has a storefront on Its Etsy as well, and she sees Amazon has an opportunity to reach millions of new potential buyers. Amazon Homemade should be concerning for the Brooklyn-based Etsy; however, the company’s CEO says they still have the best platform for homemade products.
Etsy has a decade of experience understanding the needs of artists and sellers and supporting them in ways that no other marketplace can. Our platform attracts 21+ million thoughtful consumers seeking to discover unique goods, and build relationships with the people who make and sell them.
With Amazon’s massive user base, Handmade is pretty much destined to be a success.
