Smart Home System Aims at Controlling Things with Mind
Haven’t you ever wanted to own such a smart home system where everything would happen without any physical input from you? The ideal bachelor pad or something? Well, it looks like scientists are actually trying to give you something like that.
Eda Akman Aydin of Gazi University, Turkey and her team of researchers are trying to create a system that will auto control the appliances simply with an instruction from your mind. Yes, we are talking about a brain controlled system here!
The aim is to help the disabled people by providing them with an alternative to things that they are unable to do otherwise due to physical constraints of their body. However, I can already imagine thousands of you wanting to own a similar smart home system.
Aydin and her team is using an EEG cap to record P300 signals from the user’s brain and translating them into an order for the system that will then control the appliances.
So far, they have successfully experimented with people who managed to control a TV, select a movie of their choice and adjust the volume simply with their brain. That is in addition to complete control over phone, light and heating system.
The system uses a number of images representing the different appliances, and when the user looks at the image on the appliance he / she wants to use, the EEG cap picks up a P300 signal motioning the smart home system to proceed with the next set of images and hence instructions.
Five people were tested and at 95 percent of the times, the system was able to react correctly.
I am already hoping to see brain-connected machines covering most of our lives let alone just a smart home system, are you?
