First Thunderbolt 3 Certified Motherboard Announced by Gigabyte
PC hardware maker Gigabyte has announced the first thunderbolt 3 certified motherboard. Named the GIGABYTE Z170X-UD5 TH motherboard, it brings support for 6th Generation Intel Core chips.
The board is powered by Intel’s Thunderbolt controller, that is available via two USB Type C connectors located on the back of the GIGABYTE Z170X-UD5 TH. The board brings single-wire bandwidth to 40GB/s. This is enough to run two 4K monitors at 60Fps, or one in 5K.
Moreover, Z170X-UD5 TH has support for various protocols such as DisplayPort 1.2 and USB 3.1, which is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0.
According to Gigabyte:
Support for DisplayPort 1.2 makes Thunderbolt™ 3 a must have for any enthusiast. The Z170X-UD5 TH is able to support two displays in 4K resolution at 60 FPS or one display in 5K resolution. In addition, Thunderbolt™ 3 over USB Type-C™ has revolutionary industry-first features such as Power Delivery 2.0, and the ability to daisy-chain up to 12 devices thanks to the Z170X-UD5 TH’s dual USB Type-C™ ports.
That’s not all, it comes with cFosSpeed Internet acceleration software over the Intel GbE LAN, that will improve network performance and responsiveness. Z170X-UD5 TH also supports both AMD CrossFire and Nvidia SLI for multi-GPU set-ups.
In short, this board is custom made for PC enthusiasts.
