AMD Unveils FirePro S9170, The First-ever Server GPU with 32GB of Onboard Memory
AMD today revealed the latest addition to their FirePro S-Series of GPU accelerator cards, the FirePro S9170 server GPU.
Touted as “the world’s first and fastest single-GPU server card,” the AMD FirePro S9170 features 32GB of ultra-fast GDDR5 RAM. That doubles the amount of onboard memory available for processing workloads as its predecessor.
“The AMD FirePro S9170 server GPU can accelerate complex workloads in scientific computing, data analytics, or seismic processing, wielding an industry-leading 32GB of memory,” said Sean Burke, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Professional Graphics group.
“We designed the new offering for supercomputers to achieve massive compute performance while maximizing available power budgets.”
Moreover, the new offering upraises the peak single-precision floating point performance to about 5.24 Tflops, while delivering up to 2.62Tflops of peak double-precision performance.
The FirePro S9170 is based on AMD’s Hawaii Graphics Core Next GPU architecture, with support for OpenCL 2.0.
According to AMD, the new card has the edge in raw performance and energy efficiency. As per the official claim, the card is capable of delivering up to 40 percent more performance than the “competitive solution” while using 10 percent less power.
Featuring a 512-bit memory interface for 320GBps of memory bandwidth, the S9170 is said to accelerate memory-intensive applications much more easily than previous products.
The firm said the latest server GPU is designed for compute-intensive workflows. Which makes it “ideal for data center managers who oversee clusters within academic or government bodies, oil and gas industries, or deep neural network compute cluster development.”
The FirePro S9170 is planned to hit the market in the third quarter. AMD didn’t specify exact pricing for the GPU, saying that it will depend on channel partners.
