HBM on AMD’s R9 Fury X Can be Overclocked, Results Show 20% Increase in Memory Frequency
The only way you can change the settings on AMD’s new flagship Radeon R9 Fury X is through the Catalyst Control Center. Which allows you to change the frequencies for both GPU and memory as well as adjust the power limit in the software.
But there is no option to tweak with the voltage settings. This might be due to a limitation in the CCC software or that the card actually restricts access to voltage settings.
Whatever the reason be, the fact of the matter is that there’s currently no option to adjust the memory clocks. However, some guys over at Hardware.Info UK have claimed to witness a slider to adjust memory clock frequency, using which they could overclock the “locked” HBM. This slider seems to have appeared due to some strange error in the CCC software.
Here’s what they wrote in the report:
… we did see a slider to adjust memory clock frequency after every other few reboots. Hence, we could also raise the memory clock.
We set the power limit to maximum, so +50%, as well as changing the speed of our 5960X to the normal 4.5GHz we use in overclock tests.
We ended up being able to change the GPU speeds by 95MHz to 1145 MHz and the memory by 100MHz. The latter seems a bit on the low side, but it is actually 20% on top of the standard frequencies this card uses.
In the end we managed to get a 3DMark Fire Strike score of 16963 points on overclocked settings, a nice increase on the standard 14098 points we achieved.
The above screenshot shows that the team managed to achieve 20% increase in fs score with 9% OC on core and 20% OC on mem. It should be noted that the overclocking HBM on Fury X, was earlier touted as impossible, and this score obviously proves that overclocking HBM does have an impact on the performance.
