Text Chat Bug Forcing Skype to Crash
A text bug which is forcing Skype to crash repeatedly has been fixed by the company. Reportedly, if a specific set of characters are sent to a user, their chat app will crash.
This bug has affected iOS, Android and Windows versions of Skype however, Macbooks remain untouched. This set of specific is said to consist of eight characters from Chinese, Arabic and some other non-Latin characters.
A spokesperson for the company said in a statement:
‘[We] have rolled out updates for all impacted platforms.’
Apple introduced a workaround for the issues going on with Skype on iOS however, the official bug fix from the company itself came almost after a week. Apple is apparently working on the permanent fix.
A Russian user nicknamed Giperion first discovered the issue and wrote on company’s forum page. The user reported repeated crashing even after clearing or deleting the chat history.
“Clearing chat history [does] not help, because when Skype downloads chat history from server, it will crash again.”
Venturebeat later came up with a more permanent solution to the crash issues, the website also highlighted the news and said that there actually exists a real problem with these text message sent.
According to the site, the sender of the message must delete the message and then the affected consumer must uninstall the existing app and reinstall the older version of the app in order to resolve the problem.
What might not be a problem for Windows phone i.e. installing the older version of the app, is an issue for android and iOS users. The current bug fix introduced by Apple is to ask Siri to ‘read unread messages’.
