Google Seeks Apology For Racist Search Results Regarding Obama’s Residency
Famous search engine Google is apologetic for racially biased search results spotted in its location service Google Maps. Google’s apology follows strife that was instigated after Washington post reported Tuesday that when the racist slurs “nigger”, “nigger house”, and “nigger king” were typed in Google Maps, the White House was brought on the screen.
Without explaining the causes behind obnoxious search outputs, a Google spokesperson uttered an apologizing statement. “Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offence this may have caused. Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly,” he said.
The N-words are basically withering terms for dark-skinned Americans. Google has shown courtesy by confessing the inappropriateness of the search results. However, nothing can be said about its measures to prevent such incidents from happening in future.
Google’s search subsidiaries have been termed racist in past as well. In year 2010, racist queries were noticed surfacing in its search auto-complete system after simply typing “why.” The same racial tendency was obvious in its advertising system. The mechanism was 25% more likely to show ads for criminal record checks if traditionally black names were typed in the search box.
In this year, Google had to close its Map-Maker system after Android robot was spotted pissing on Apple logo in a picture. The system permitted public contributions thus, anyone could make changes in the maps.
Until the time of writing this, Google hasn’t been able to fix the issue.
