WhatsApp 2.12.87 Update: Hello Material Design, Goodbye HOLO!
WhatsApp is the most used app for messaging around the world, until a few months back when they introduced the call feature a lot of people shifted from using other voice calling apps (I won’t name them) to WhatsApp. As it served the purpose of messaging and calling both using the same app.
However, users complained about the calls ending abruptly, lagging in voice over and having echoes. Also the call feature which was supposed to be ‘free’ was actually using huge amounts of data. Almost as much as Skype uses, WhatsApp does not offer HD video calling though, which was not appreciated by consumers.
The WhatsApp 2.12.32 update was the one that was first questioned. It was not available for all users to download directly from Play Store and it had Holo Design, or most commonly known as the boring interface. With 2.12.84, these issues were resolved; it became more organized and looked better. Still it was displaying the Gingerbread icons.
The latest update 2.12.87 has refined the user interface luckily and removes all extra things or icons from the app. Firstly, the Gingerbread icon hidden under the overflow chat option’s menu was removed. Secondly, the prevailing red and green hanging up theme has been replaced with a darker green and a pinkish shade.
Another add-on during call is, caller id will be more highlighted using bigger fonts. The new Material Design UI has also revamped the main screen with minimalistic icons. It has also added iOS emoticons and changed the icon color and font sizes. The color tones for default wallpaper have also been changed.
