HTC Interested in Low-End Tablets
HTC has expressed interest in launching an affordable tablet, which ties in with recent rumors of the company working on new tablet surfaces.
Speaking with Chinese media at the Taiwan launch of the One M9+, HTC North Asia boss Jack Tong said the company is “looking closely” at the entry-level and mid-tier tablet market.
“There is less room for product differentiation and a fierce price war, so we must be very cautious about running that business. We will see if we can get better returns on smartphones or other businesses. But we are looking closely at it,” he said.
However, Tong did not address the rumors of HTC bringing an affordable tablet later this year. The rumors, which began a week ago, state that HTC is working on a low-end tablet device codenamed H7. It is speculated for a launch in Q2 of 2015, by the end of June.
The rumors were posted by @upleaks, who has a pretty good track record when it comes with HTC rumors.
HTC has done little to take advantage of the exposure it attained through the release of its co-branded Google Nexus 9 last year. The company could have used the release to boost themselves in the market with more devices and wares.
There’s still time, though, for HTC to cater to the waning tablet market with a low-end model that can capture the crowd which usually stays away from the steep prices.
