WhatsApp Call? Not That Cheap!
WhatsApp calling feature that was introduced at the beginning of this year gained massive popularity when it was made available for iPhone users as well. The feature which was said to be ‘free’ turns out not to be; it is rather expensive than the traditional calling method.
So if you are using Wifi or unlimited hotspot then there is no problem but if you are surviving on data plans then you might be in trouble and these small calls can cost you a fortune. The call itself is free but the data you are using has a price and the more you use, the more money it costs you.
According to a report by AndroidPIT, a single minute call over WhatsApp using the 4G LTE can use data up to 1.3 MB and a minimum of 600 KB. These numbers are huge, although they vary but a minute worth of call can cost users way more than the actual/traditional call. As revealed by AndroidPIT:
Data Monitor produced results that ranged between 800 KB – 1.3 MB with an average of 960 KB per minute. The Android system gave us a lower average of 600 KB per minute.
Keeping the above mentioned figures in mind and coming up with an average WhatsApp call can still use 780 KB, so a user with a 1GB plan will be allowed a total of 1282 minutes (21 hours) each month. Giving users a maximum of 42 minutes each day.
Another drawback of the WhasApp call, the receiver of the call also uses data for receiving the call. While most of the apps proving free calls or otherwise, do not burden the receiver with call charges. What are your views on this? Are you still willing to pay for the not-so-free WhatsApp call?
