Want To Get Rid of Earworms? Chew a Gum
Never in my life have I felt this happy, researchers have discovered if a song is stuck in your head, like a really really annoying song which you do not want to hum then there is a solution. Trying chewing a gum! Yes you heard that right, a chewing gum will help you get rid of a song stuck in your mind.
Scientists call these earworms. According to a team at University of Reading, the best possible way of getting these annoying voices out of your mind is by chewing a gum.
In the past, theories have said that by reading a novel or attempting to solve a puzzle might also help but over a three course research, these scientists say that chewing gum will reduce the process if not eliminate.
“If you are trying to rid yourself of an unwanted tune, it is less likely to pop up involuntarily when chewing,” says Philip Beaman of University of Reading.
Nearly 44 members of the research listened to David Guetta featuring Flo Rida and Akon’s ‘Play Hard’ twice and were asked to press the ‘q’ button every time the song popped in their head. Then they were asked to follow the step while ‘chewing vigorously’. The results differed; participants pressed the ‘q’ button relatively more when they were not chewing on a gum.
Second experiment consisted of 18 participants and they were asked to prompt if they thought of the song voluntarily or it just kept on playing in their heads. The results were similar again, while chewing they thought of the song less.
The third and final experiment involved a group of 36 participants that listened to Payphone by Maroon 5, it once again proved that people played the song in their minds less while chewing a gum.
