Dedicated Freight Pipelines To Make Trucks Disappear From The Roads
A British company along with support from the government has come up with a technology to enhance freight distribution. As a result of this implementation, traffic congestion and pollution is expected to decrease significantly.
Not to keep you wondering for now, the innovation is going to be in the form of dedicated freight pipelines that are going to run from out-the-way to urban hubs. The technology has been developed along the lines of Maglev-type levitation rail prototypes.
Showing full support for the project, the government has also started conducting feasibility studies in the geographic heart of England – the city of Northampton. The study is expected to complete by the end of this year.
Managing director of Mole Systems, Roger Miles, the company behind this idea justifies the study, saying:
We’re establishing the economic viability and social and environmental impacts—for instance, what is the number trucks that can be taken off the road?
We know its much more energy efficient than using a truck and wagon and the operating costs are lower. But, of course, you have to justify the infrastructure, so you need significant volume.
Moving on to the specifics of the carriers, these tubes are going to be 4 – 8 feet wide, designed to carry conventional pallets which are able to load and offload themselves automatically. This ‘mole’ idea for freight distribution is mostly going to be used between freight warehouses on the edge of the cities and retailer hubs in the city center (shopping malls, hospitals, universities).
The pipelines will run alongside the roads and waterways, remaining above ground in order to save costs.
The new system will incur high initial and running costs, but the advantages it offers outweigh such concerns. Once the system is in place, logistic companies won’t have to worry about road congestion or any weather conditions. Another major benefit is that these companies will save a lot as far as driver wages are concerned, because the system as explained involves minimum human intervention.
