Samsung Gear VR Headset For Galaxy S6 Will Be Available From April 24
Samsung is releasing the version of its virtual reality (VR) headset that works with Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on April 24. The company will start accepting preorders through Best Buy starting from the same day.
The VR headset will go on general sale through both Samsung and Best Buy from May 8. Lastly, these headsets will hit retail stores on May 15 where potential buyers would be able to see the demonstrations of the device as well.
The Gear VR Innovator Edition is the newest addition in Samsung’s VR headsets line and it is compatible with the Korean company’s latest flagship devices — Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The headset works in a similar way as the other Gear VR in a sense that it does not have a display of its own. Rather, it works after it is connected with a smartphone which is inserted inside it.
Last year, Samsung announced the Gear VR which was only compatible with Galaxy Note 4 phablet. However, the company also announced at Mobile World Congress that it will launch a version for its latest flagship devices, making it available for more customers.
With Gear VR Innovator Edition, both Samsung and Oculus (the company that powers Gear VR headsets) hope to bring this tech to millions of consumers, thus widening the target market.
“Expanding Oculus virtual reality to the innovative Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge is a huge step towards helping tech enthusiasts get involved in this new revolution,” explained Max Cohen, head of mobile at Oculus, in a press release.
Samsung has not revealed the price tag of the headset yet.
