KickassTorrents Shifts To .im TLD
KickassTorrents has shifted its domain name to Isle of Man TLD (Top-Level Domain) and it has started serving its pages from this new .im domain. All of the requests to original .to domain are now being redirected to this new domain kickasstorrents.im.
TorrentFreak reports that KAT’s domain change was not made as a result of any issues related to registry problems, rather the move was planned by KAT.
KAT does so after every six months so the change was made as part of the tradition. Over the years, KAT has moved from one domain to another. Some of these moves were made to evade law enforcing authorities while some were part of the tradition.
Earlier this year, KAT shifted its domain to Somalian .so TLD but this domain name was soon suspended compelling the KAT team to shift their site back to .to domain (Kickass.to).
The move will have some positive effects on KAT in terms of accessibility. Firstly, the site will be unblocked (at least for some time) in the regions where it has been blocked.
Secondly, URLs that were blocked by Google under DMCA notices will again become accessible under the new domain. There are almost 2 million blocked URLs. This also means that Google’s downranking algorithm will be bypassed until the folks at Google rewrite their algorithm and that will take some time.
KAT has been serving millions of unique visitors per day. The website has went on to become even bigger than the mighty Pirate Bay in terms of unique visitors. But Google’s downranking algorithms have been causing negative effects on site’s accessibility. We expect to see more such domain name changes in future.
