HTC Vive VR Headsets Are Available to Developers for Free
Those who want to develop VR games can get their hands on the HTC Vive Developer Edition VR headset free of charge. The only problem is that getting one won’t be an easy task though.
The headset in question was revealed at this year’s Mobile World Conference. At the time of announcement, HTC claimed that it will be the only device of its kind to offer a “truly immersive” VR experience. The VR headset isn’t yet available commercially, but developer can sign-up to get a unit for development.
As I mentioned, getting a unit isn’t easy so just filling out a form online won’t cut it. Developers will not only have to fill their details, but also require to tell Valve why should they be chosen. So can you convince Valve?
The submission then will head towards a process of selection that will result in distribution.
Valve wrote in a post:
Our goal is to support as many VR content creators as possible and, to that end, we will be distributing dev kits continually, with new units going out every couple of weeks. However, supplies may be limited.
Distribution will start this spring and will go on until summer.
SteamVR developer community and general SteamVR discussion pages are also there in addition to sign-up pages. So those interested to develop games for Valve’s VR can join the discussion and engage with the community.
