You Can’t Go to Mars if We Don’t Support You, Says NASA
SpaceX and MarsOne are just two of the many ambitious projects that are currently attempting to take humans to what is being deemed as the largest step in human evolution for a millennia i.e. the journey to Mars!
While everyone is boasting of beating everyone else to it (MarsOne says they will do it as early as in the 2020s), did we stop and think whether they really can on their own?
Ask NASA and they will sneer a big no at you.
This was reiterated by Charles Bolden, Administrator at National Aeronautics and Space Administration in a meet with the Subcommittee on Space, Committee on Science, Space and Technology of the U.S House of Representatives.
No commercial company without the support of NASA and government is going to get to Mars.
That is what he said when addressing the matter of competition from commercial organizations – that would normally be translated in SpaceX and MarsOne.
Bolden is pretty confident that humans going to Mars is one of the most important steps that need to be taken right now, in fact he went as far as to say that humans need to “get away from being Earth-reliant” and that “we need to understand Mars and what happened to it to understand what might happen to Earth.”
He further added that “our ultimate focus is the journey to Mars and everything comes back to that,” which is why NASA is working on the Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) which will go functional in 2020.
Do you think that the private commercial companies are going to be able to stand true to their claims if they are relying so much on NASA?
