Reddit Announces Embeddable Comment Threads
Reddit has announced a new feature called ‘embeddable comment threads’ which will allow writers from different sites to attribute Reddit comments on their own websites and blogs. The new reddit feature remained in beta testing for couple of months before it was officially announced for common usage.
Previously, writer would cut and paste comments’ text which often became testing in the cases of long texts. This very feature does not require copy-pasting of the comments; in order to referring to them, the writer can easily showcase comments from the Reddit users by navigating through permalink and selecting “embed.” A small code will be generated for insertion in blogs or articles. The writer will also be given the option of including the parent comment.
Embeddable comments will, however, not deprive the original commentators on Reddit. That is to say they will still have the authority to either edit or delete their comments. In addition to this, embedded comments will keep featuring a link to the original comment thread and subreddit.
The feature applies to the public subreddits only. Reddit has introduced this feature to make the discussion audience more in control of what they share on the platform. “Reddit isn’t just a source for news or adorable cat pictures; it’s also home to some of the most vibrant discussions happening on the Internet,” Reddit blog reads.
Reddit is already being visited by nearly 150 million people every month. Additionally, it hosts AMAs with some of the most notable figures — Barak Obama is an example. The initiative is also being seen as a monetizing tactic by the Reddit as embeddable comments are likely to attract even more visitors and advertisers.
Despite all the conveniences being offered to feature Reddit comments, websites, news sites in particular, need to keep certain things in mind: firstly, absolute trust can not be put in the users of Reddit for mining the information. Secondly, questionable usernames even make it more ridiculous to refer one as source of information.
Just have a look at the following comment which was taken from the discussion on the announcement of embeddable comment threads.
