Retaining The Thrones Of Riches: Bill Gates Is Still The Richest Man On The Planet
Although Microsoft has not been through best of its time since past few months (or rather years), its decline hasn’t affected the riches of its founder and former CEO Bill Gates who has, yet another time, been declared the world’s richest man by Forbes.
Since the business magazine has started the poll for the richest billionaires of the world, Gates has topped the list for 16 times out of the total 21 times. This is the second consecutive year when the Microsoft founder has lead the poll of the richest men of the planet. Mexican mobile phone magnate Carlos Slim remained on the top position from 2010 to 2013 before he was relegated to the second position by Mr. Gates last year and now again in 2105.
The amazing rise in Gate’s net worth by $3 billion in the year to Feb 13, to an eye-popping $79 billion was sufficient to relegate the winner of four consecutive years.
According to Forbes, Gates net worth could be about $100 billion, had he not sold one third of his Microsoft shares last year, had he not given “a gift of shares worth $1.5 billion to The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in November 2014, which brought his lifetime giving up to $29.5 billion.”
Gates no longer runs Microsoft. Earlier this year, he was overtaken by another former CEO, Steve Ballmer, as the company’s larger shareholder. Gates resigned as the chairman of the Microsoft board in February 2014, and now he works as the technical adviser. However, his main focus is in philanthropic activities which he is continuing with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
“Gates, who spends most of his time focused on philanthropy, laid out some decisive goals for his Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in his annual January letter. While continuing to work on improving U.S. education and global health, the foundation is also committed to getting Africa to feed itself and wants to help spread mobile banking so that the poor can transform their lives,” notes Forbes.
