YouTube Kids App Is Now Available on Google Play
Google unveiled its new kid-friendly YouTube app — YouTube Kids — on Monday. It is now available on Google Play as well as on Apple’s App Store for iOS devices.
YouTube Kids is the company’s first app focused on kids. It filters adult-oriented content and shows only videos geared towards young audience.
As we reported about YouTube Kids earlier, parents will be able to find children-focused content available in the app which includes programming from DreamWorks, Jim Henson, and others. The interface of the app has large icons to make it easier for kids to read and learn programming. In addition to all these features, YouTube Kids also lets parents limit screen time, searchable content, and sound.
“Videos in the YouTube Kids app are narrowed down to content appropriate for kids,” the company wrote in a blog post on Monday. “You can browse channels and playlists in four categories: Shows, Music, Learning and Explore. Or search for videos of particular interest to your family, like how to build a model volcano, math tutorials, the amazing (and endless) world of trains–and everything in between.”
YouTube was lagging behind in offering a kids-friendly app. Other video providers had taken measures to filter out adult content and to provide parental-guided platform for kids. For example, Netflix has its own kids section and their kids app allows parents to set age-appropriate content to be viewed by their kids. Similarly, Amazon offers a service called FreeTime which gives parents control over the content watched by their kids and for how long on its products.
Google said that the company has been looking for ways to offer products and services solely focused on kids, and this is the first step in the process.
The search giant also acquired Launchpad Toys, the company that makes products for kids such as Toontastic and educational apps. The move shows Google’s intent to offer kids-oriented products and it is also confirmed by the company’s spokesperson as well.
Since Facebook started seeing huge growth in video, YouTube has been on alert, working on several new projects to keep its audience on its platform. Recently, it started offering additional benefits to top content creators, allowing them to generate more revenue by connecting with top advertisers and brands.
Google will make the YouTube Kids app available to the Kurio and Nabi kids’ tablets soon.
