YouTube Introduces Chinese Variant of its Developer-Focused Channel
For developers in China, YouTube has launched a new developer-focused channel in their native language. With this new channel, Chinese developers will be served with content in Chinese Mandarin language, in addition to the curated content with Chinese captions for English channels.
The company announced via a blog post on February 16 that the channel is being introduced to make it easier for Chinese developers to understand and know more about Google services and their technology behind web, mobile and cloud.
The company said in a blog post:
Today, the Google Developer Platform team is launching a Chinese language and captioned YouTube channel, aiming to make it easier for the developers in China to learn more about Google services and technologies around mobile, web and the cloud. The channel includes original content in Chinese (Mandarin speaking), and curates content from the English version of the Google Developers channel with Simplified Chinese captions.
In the same post, the company thanked Google Developers Group community from Nanyang city. They contributed to providing Chinese translations for English developer channels.
The original English developer channel on YouTube has 650,000 and more than 78 million views to this day. On the other hand, the newly released Chinese channel has little less than 2000 subscribers at the moment.
According to Google, they will produce more original content in Chinese language along with leveraging volunteers of GDC from China in order to provide more “Chinese captioned English videos” on Google’s Developer Channel, that’ll serve the learning need of developers from this region.
The latest move from the company seems like an attempt to attract more Chinese developers for their Android platform. China recently overhauled its Great Farewell Internet filter that made it difficult for US websites like Twitter, Google and others to reach the country’s audience without using virtual private network.
However, even with all the limitations and restrictions Google is trying to make it easier for locals to use their developer network. It remains to be seen how successful Google will be in its efforts.
