Imgur Pro is Now Free for Everyone Along With All the Perks
Almost 6 years ago, Imgur was launched by Alan Schaaf and since then, the company has become one of the top 50 websites around the world. The company uses ads and Pro account subscriptions to generate revenue. However, that is no longer the case as Pro is now free for all as announced by Imgur.
It wasn’t that expensive anyway as it only cost $3 a month or $24 if you go for an annual subscription. Expensive or not, it was a major part of Imgur’s business. Ads are the most annoying part of free-to-use apps and same was the case with Imgur. Users who found it irritating had the option to upgrade to Pro version.
That wasn’t the only reason for upgrade though. Users who subscribed to the pro account had access to analytics, less size limitations while sharing pictures and more. Making the Pro account free for all will surely have an impact on Imgur’s revenues. So how will the company make up for it? Simple, the ads will make up for it that are now visible to everyone, without discrimination.
As for all the features that are now available to everyone, here’s what you can expect. Usually, free users were only allowed to upload 225 images, now they can upload unlimited amount of images from their account.
In addition, multiple thumbnail options are now available to everyone as well. After an image has been uploaded, users will be able to keep a track of total image views, which can be graphed using data range and they can also view sources of traffic referral among other perks.
Previously, free users could only host images of 5MB in size while Pro users could host upto 10MB. Now both users are capped at 5MB only, that is unless you are uploading a GIF which can be of 200MB max.
The decision to make Imgur Pro free came as way for the company to celebrate its 6th birthday. Yes! Our little Imgur is now 6 years old. It’s good news but the question is, what will happen with those who subscribed to Imgur Pro recently?
Thankfully, they will be offered refunds that will be sent via Google Wallet or PayPal.
So there you have it, Imgur’s way to celebrate its birthday has benefited the whole community. How do you see this decision by Imgur? Share your take on the story with us in the comments section below.
