ARM Acquires Dutch IoT firm Offspark to Bolster its New mbed OS
Chip designer ARM has bought a leading Internet of Things security software firm Offspark, the company announced today.
Based in Netherlands, Offspark specializes in cyber security and cryptography, and maintains an open source SSL library called PolarSSL. The PolarSSL technology is the most widely deployed Transport Layer Security (TLS) solution for encrypting traffic between IoT embedded devices including sensors, smartphones and communication modules.
With this acquisition, ARM says it will be able to use Offspark’s PolarSSL to form the core of its new mbed operating system for IoT devices. The technology will be rebranded as ARM mbed TLS; however, it will remain open source and will be available to developers for commercial use.
Talking about the deal, ARM’s general manager of IoT business, Krisztian Flautner, said:
We have always said that security must be the foundation of any IoT system and the acquisition of Offspark is evidence of us making that happen.
PolarSSL technology is already deployed by the leading IoT players. The fact that those same companies also utilize ARM Cortex® processor and software technologies means we are now able to provide a complete bedrock solution for the industry to innovate from.
The terms of the business deal were not disclosed.
Internet-connected devices are trending these days, with several enterprises investing in the growing field to gain a foothold in the industry. However security is of prime importance when it comes to ensuring people trust IoT technology.
ARM’s purchase of Offspark is the company’s latest move to provide advanced communication security and software cryptography using its new mbed platform.
ARM launched mbed as a free software last October. Along with OS, it also released the mbed device server to securely manage devices and help the developers to easily sync them with the cloud.
The OS is expected to be released toward the end of 2015 under an Apache 2.0 license, which will include mbed TLS, as well as other key technologies, including Thread and Nest.
The release of mbed TLS 1.3.10, is now available under GPL and to existing PolarSSL customers on polarssl.org.
