WhatsApp’s Free Voice Calling Feature is Rolling out Like an Unveiling Mystery
When you open the official website of WhatsApp, you see written on the Home page “Simple. Personal. Real Time Messaging.” But from now on, I would presumably say, this note will be read as Simple. Personal. Real-Time Messaging and FREE CALLING. Yes the app, is reportedly, launching – progressively though – its new free calling service for its Android users.
The reason behind calling it a ‘slow roll out’ is that the App has not publicly announced about the free calling service. Though, it has been promised that the new feature will be available in first quarter of 2015.
The evidence, although from a single user until now, is not that weak. In fact, he has fairly endeavored to ‘make believe’ new features rolling out.
Pradnesh07, a Reddit user, posted few screenshots which verify that the user has access to the new voice calling feature. He is using the latest WhatsApp (v2.11.508) for Android on a Google Nexus 5 running Android 5.0.1 Lollipop in India.
The user says that others who are using the needed WhatsApp version, Android OS version, and device may still not be able to activate the new feature, until and unless, they receive a call from another activated user.
Interesting! Did WhatsApp make its first call to this user? Whatsoever, this is not, for sure, a special ‘offer’ for Pradnesh but he seems a subject of a sort of experimental roll out of the feature.
At the same time, the Pradnesh07 believes that the user who activated the service in aforementioned way, may not be able to make further calls themselves. So the ambiguity is grave, receiving a call from a user who has activated the service can, and can’t, active your service.
This confusion, however, does not mean that the user is exaggerating as he uploaded a short clip which shows us how the user was actually able to place a call to one of the number in his contact list.
It is obvious from the video that after the addition of the new feature WhatsApp will show a new calls tab on top, along with already present Chats and Contacts. User will be able to start a call with his WhatsApp contacts using the ‘New call’ button.
After watching the video, I can reveal you that once the feature will be fully working on your device, you will see a standard calling interface with all the necessary buttons i.e to disconnect, to mute, speakers etc. Additionally, the clip shows that the call history is available in the feature. However, the user did not upload a screenshot that could give me an idea of an in-call interface.
Well, until the app finally reaches our devices, let’s keep discussing it and making wild guesses. Have you received the ‘call’ that will activate free calling feature for you? How do you perceive this new feature from WhatsApp? Do write in the comments!
