Pinterest Adds Gender-Based Filter To Its Website
Visiting different websites, looking for the product we want is how we mostly shop in the modern era. It’s interesting, convenient and far more accessible compared to a physical store.
However, searching for items online gets a bit difficult when you’re not able to find what you are looking for. Search results show a variety of products without any regard for gender. For example, typing “watches” in the search bar will show items for both men and women.
Pinterest has come up with a more personalized way of searching for the product you need. The site will now use a gender-based filter, to help men search for items based on their gender.
According to a post on their website:
..men will see Pins and guides inspired by what other guys have Pinned, and everybody’s results should feel a lot closer to what they’re looking for. Of course if you ever want results for another gender, like if you’re shopping for a gift for someone else, you can always use the guides to fine-tune your search.
It seems like this filter is introduced to make the website more male-friendly. The site reached over 70 million users in the United States and 71 percent of its users are women, according to comScore figures.
With that said, the company’s internal data from November revealed that one-third of new accounts on the website belong to men. Pinterest has also revealed that their male user percentage has grown 73% compared to 2014. This makes men a fast-growing demographic for Pinterest.
Some figures suggest that men favor searches related to technology, apparel, travel, gadgets, luxury cars, tattoos camping and strangely, gardening and recipes as well.
By introducing this new filter, Pintrest wants to make sure they are as much useful to men as possible. According to a statement by the company: “You don’t need to dig through irrelevant Pins when searching for things like shoes, sunglasses, workouts, hair, and tattoos.”
The feature is not meant to hide items for you but show relevant content. It however, can be turned on and off as will. That’s useful when you are searching for a gift for your wife or girlfriend.
The company has also stated that more changes and improvements will be introduced in the future, to enhanced the experience.
