Tinder Acquires Photo-Messaging App Tappy for Undisclosed Sum
Inter Active Corporation, the creators of popular matchmaking mobile application Tinder has acquired Chill – the creators behind Tappy. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Those who don’t know, Tappy is essentially a text messaging application for smartphones that uses images and ephemeralness to give it a different touch. Thanks to its ephemeralness, all messages are automatically deleted after 24-hour duration and it is crucial that each message should start with an image.
The UI of Tappy is more like Facebook’s News Feed than a messenger with large photos serving as the ‘Featured Images’ of various chats. Everything is integrated in a flawless manner and there are some good things picked up from Snapchat and Instagram. Lastly, users have the ability to initiate a conversation in either a group or solo.
Speaking of the acquisition, CEO and Co-Founder of Tinder Sean Red stated that they are growing rapidly and wish to hire more talented people to achieve their objectives for 2015:
We’re growing and recruiting like crazy. It’s incredibly difficult to find talented people to join us fast enough to keep up with our roadmap for 2015, which includes some ambitious plans. When I spoke with Brian, we found that our goals for two separate products were such a great match. There are some specific things that they’ve done in the past that we wouldn’t have to figure out on our own moving forward.
He further stated that they are very good at connecting people, but wished to provide users something more than just connecting and this is where the Tappy team comes in:
We’re very good at connecting people, but there’s this ‘what happens after that?’ moment that we want to improve. We not only want to get better at the way we use criteria to connect people, but we want to broaden the reasons for connecting in the first place. The Tappy team will help us tackle both fronts, the pre-match experience of creating that first connection and the post-match experience of communicating with that person.
Jordan Crook of TechCrunch reports, “Tinder is now seeing 1.5 billion swipes every day, 21 million matches each day, and just yesterday surpassed the 5 billion match mark.”
On the other hand, Co-Founder of Tappy Brian Norgard stated that the chance of working with Tinder will open up opportunities to do more awesome things and also gives them a chance to lead from the front.
