Tumblr Sees Massive Growth In Active Users, Snapchat Becomes The Fastest-Growing App
A few years ago when Facebook started attracting huge audience and became the world’s largest social network, many people thought that no social network would be able to overtake Facebook. Although there is still a huge way to go for other social networks if they want to overtake Facebook as the world’s largest one, but we are slowly getting there.
According to the latest reports published by Global Web Index, a market research firm, Tumblr’s active user base grew by 120 percent in the last six months, while Facebook’s grew by only 2 percent. Another key point to note in the report is that other relatively small social networks have also seen huge growth.
Instagram’s active user base saw a growth of 36 percent, while Pinterest took the lead in overall member growth with 57 percent growth in active users.
However, the fastest growing mobile app in last six months, as reported by GWI, is Snapchat. Facebook tops the list of having the largest user base but Snapchat has seen more growth (56%) than Facebook’s mobile app.
Instagram comes on third spot in the list of fastest growing mobile apps. Recent survey also showed that U.S. teens favored Instagram over Facebook because they didn’t want their elders to know about their activities.
Facebook is believed to reach its saturation point as its growth has decreased to 2%. However, different innovative steps taken by the world’s largest social network keep it in the competition. For example, the introduction of Facebook Messenger for separating messages from the main Facebook app has made its Messenger secure second spot very close to Snapchat.
Still, Facebook has a major competition from relatively smaller apps like Snapchat and others. “Facebook has some major challenges to face,” Jason Mander, head of trends and author of the report, writes. “Firstly, people are growing tired of it, with 50% of members in the UK and US saying that they’re using it less frequently than they used to (rising to 64% among teens).”
He said that behaviors like sharing photos and messaging friend on Facebook have fallen by 20 percent since 2013.
GWI also reveals just how big Facebook currently is by comparing it with Internet and countries’ population. It notes that 4 out of 5 people in China have a Facebook account. ITU announced that there are now 3 billion people online worldwide. So Facebook’s active user base of 1.36 billion means that over one-third of the world’s population is now on Facebook.
These reports also reveal the fact that the competition among social networks is so high that the one who lacks innovation falls behind in a matter of months. Last year when GWI released its report, Instagram topped the list of fastest-growing mobile app. Now it has fallen below to the third spot.
