Overglide: An iOS Game You Can Play From The Lock Screen
Overglide is a new game on the App Store that has neither the eye candy graphics nor does it feature a cool gameplay, but still it’s pretty awesome because it is the first of its kind. That’s right, Overglide is the first game that you play right from within the Notification Center, even while your iOS device is locked.
Sometimes you don’t become unique by doing something extraordinary but rather because how you do it. The same holds true for Overglide.
The game requires players to dodge the obstacles and pilot the paper plane through a cave as far as possible while facing ever increasing difficulty. That sounds of a simple flying game — what makes it so special is that you don’t tap an icon on your home screen to access Overglide.
Instead you simply swipe down Notification Center to start playing. “You can quickly access Overglide from the today screen or lock screen to easily try and beat your top score anytime,” developer AA Matter noted in release notes accompanying the download.
Before you run the game, you must first tap on “Edit” at the bottom of your Today view in the Notification Center to enable the app. Once enabled, Overglide will be just a swipe away. The main app serves as a settings interface and lets you can choose your preferred backdrop (Transparent, Black or Blue Skies) and block (Silver, Green or Wood).
The game comes with Center leaderboards, and you can also challenge your friends and share scores via Facebook, Twitter, email or SMS.
Unless you jailbreak, native apps can’t really run within the Notification Center. In case of Overglide, the developer basically disguised an iOS 8 widget as a game. Further, he focused on keeping the game simplified in terms of graphics and feature set as widgets can only register touch events and swipes and don’t support keyboard entry.
Yes, Overglide is touch-based; you just touch and and hold to glide up and release to fly down. Though the game isn’t sort of addictive and not going to keep you entertained for hours, it’s still a dream come true for those who have had ever though of playing a game on the Lock screen.
I’m more surprised over the approval of Overglide by Apple’s App Store reviewers because the company’s TOS clearly cautions developers to avoid putting a scroll view inside a Today widget as it causes difficulty “for users to scroll within a widget without inadvertently scrolling the Today view.”
Anyhow, you can download Overglide for iOS from the App Store right now for just $0.99. Grab it as soon as possible, before someone from Apple’s app review team takes a disliking to it.
Overglide is compatible with both iPhone and iPad, however you must have iOS 8 or higher running on your device.
