Facebook’s New App Rooms: Everything You Need to Know!
We don’t know where Mark Zuckerberg is going to stop. Facebook started as an online social network but it is evolving into much more. Earlier, Zuckerberg launched a great initiative Internet.org that aims to provide affordable Internet all over the world. He recently visited India to promote this project.
Now, Facebook released a new app called “Rooms” which is much like Reddit. Its unique feature is that it lets you post using pseudonyms — different usernames for different rooms.
Using this app, you can create a discussion board or a “room” and share the link with your friends to invite them to the discussion. If you want to create a public discussion room, you can post a public link so that anyone can join it. Public rooms appear in the search results when anyone search for the relevant rooms.
You do not need to have a unique username to use this app. You can use one name in a particular room and second name in another room. You just need to have a unique name in a particular room. For example, you may have a username “IAmAwesome” in one room and “MoreAwesome” in another.
Although an email is not required to use this app, it is recommended that you provide an email address for security measure. Also, if you lose your phone or if you want to use the app from another device, you can do so by using your email address.
The app also permits the creator of thread to set discussion rules. For example, the creator can set whether each post needs to be approved by the moderator or not.Furthermore, each room can be customized by color and other features. You can change the color of Like button or even its icon and call it by any name.
Although the app is aimed to let people discuss about any topic, it is not an old-school app. It is targeted at Instagram generation and lets users post photos and videos in the discussions too. Users can add a caption too.
Recent survey showed that majority of the teens were moving away from Facebook and towards Instagram. Perhaps, this app is a way for Facebook to persuade them back to platform.
Rooms is in testing phase where Facebook employees and some limited outsiders will give their feedback. Currently, there are some discussion topics like kendama, a Japanese toy.
How will it be used by common people? We don’t know that yet. My guess is that people will mostly use it to set up a room for a party say “Welcome Party”, invite all of the participants to the room and they will share the photos. It will ease the participants in sharing photos with only those who were actually present at the party.
The app has a great concept and looks promising. We hope it has a good interface too. It is currently available only at iOS and cannot be used via website version.
