Finnish PM Blames Apple For Killing Nokia And Paper Industry
Finland’s Prime Minister Alexander Stubb was questioned about the country’s business environment following a decline in its credit rating in a recent interview on CNBC. In a reply, the PM blamed Apple for affecting Finland’s IT and paper industry by inventing iPhones and iPads respectively.
Here are his exact words: “A little bit paradoxically I guess one could say that the iPhone killed Nokia and the iPad killed the Finnish paper industry, but we’ll make a comeback.”
Stubb’s response isn’t a surprise. The PM has openly blamed Apple in the past for the country’s economic struggles as well.
Well, PM’s take on demise of his country’s economy is totally illogical. IT marketplace has been changing for quite a time. While other companies like Apple and Samsung adapted to the change, Nokia stayed stuck in the past. Moreover, Apple and Nokia target different categories of customers.
iPhone 6 starts from $649 and offers high-end specs. Apple targets flagship users, and those who need powerful specs on their devices. On the other hand, Nokia has always offered budget phones for low-end users. Even with the release of Android operating system, when Samsung, HTC, and Motorola started using Android OS and succeeded in the mobile industry, Nokia didn’t exploit this opportunity. They kept on manufacturing Symbian phones and eventually saw their demise.
And if that wasn’t enough, Nokia decided to use Windows as OS for their mobiles, which was again a bad move. Now, we all know where Nokia is. All because they weren’t adaptable. Apple had nothing to do with it.
As for Apple destroying Finland’s paper industry, tablets are still not as popular as smartphones. 200 million tablets are shipped globally in an year so tablets are not to be blames. But it is true that IMs, emails and social networks have replaced letters. Almost no one prefers to send a letter over an email. Surely, some of us still like to read newspapers and magazines but many are shifting towards digital media rapidly.
Before pointing fingers at Apple, the PM should have known that Apple has been supporting Nokia considering the decline sales. Apple ended ongoing patent war with Nokia.
