Snapchat ‘Our Story’ Update is Now Available to Public
The popular image/video sharing app, Snapchat is no longer confined to sharing your life experiences with only your friends. A new update started rolling out Friday, bringing in a novel feature dubbed ‘Our Story’. The said feature enables users to create and view collections of photos and videos taken at any public event like Tomorrowland or FIFA World Cup. The best part? You don’t have to be ‘Friends’ with any of the persons featured in the collection to view it.
The feature was already available to a smattering of people, and this is the first time it has been released for everyone. For those who just received the update, here’s a quick rundown of how ‘Our Story’ works:
Imagine yourself at any public event – Tomorrowland, for instance – and using Snapchat along with other attendees of the event. After capturing any photo or video, the app will ask you if you would like to add those images/videos to a certain public collection. Should you choose to do so, that particular collection will be visible to every Snapchat user around the globe. However, do note that random users will never be able to identify who created which particular snaps.
The Verge reports that the said feature was originally tested at the Electric Daisy Carnival back in June in Las Vegas closely followed by another test at FIFA World Cup Brazil in July. During both the tests, only those users who had the app at that time and were physically present at the event were able to test it out.
The announcement of availability of ‘Our Story’ to public comes via the official blog post which states that users will notice a new ‘Live’ section under the Recent Updates:
You’ll notice today that there’s a new ‘Live’ section beneath your Recent Updates. That’s where you’ll be able to experience Stories contributed by the Snapchat community at all sorts of events. It’s a great way to check out what’s happening around the world.
Although the company’s primary target is to enable users share live entertainment experiences from around the world, I see a lot of potential for journalistic uses and behind the curtain gaming and technology conventions.
