Xiaomi Launches MIUI v6 Where “Less Is More”
Xiaomi is one of the leading Chinese device maker companies known for its high-quality phones, tablets and smart TVs at low prices. What more Xiaomi is also known for is its MIUI software which adds a custom user interface and some extra apps to Google Android.
Xiaomi is bidding farewell to MIUI v5 and making way for its latest version, the MIUI v6, which is also the biggest update from MIUI so far.
Having been pointed at for resembling iOS with its round-cornered square app icons, MIUI v6 with its bright chromatic palette and flat design is certainly taking its inspiration from iOS 7 and 8. After all, it is being said that MIUI 6 is basically about the look. However, there are plenty of changes and additions to the apps and features:
The biggest change is seen in the MIUI launcher of MIUI v6. Coming with a whole new look, it is also faster and more convenient compared to the crowded MIUI v5.
Incoming calls, new messages and downloads are now displayed in a larger black notification bar at the top of the screen, allowing more flexibility to the user.
For example, if you are taking a picture and a call comes through in the middle of it, it won’t disrupt you since only a small portion of the screen will display the name of the caller, allowing you to finish taking your picture and then attending the call.
Xiaomi has a huge user audience, which is expanding by the day. This means the servers (with our permission) can collect a lot of useful information to help us.
For example, many times we ignore calls from unknown numbers. However, what if the number is actually a valid number stored in MIUI’s server, let’s suppose of a delivery carriage? You can now identify the number even if it’s not saved in your contacts, using the new cloud features in MIUI v6.
Xiaomi reports they have 60 million phone numbers saved from businesses and services for identifying the caller. This feature also makes our phone conversations secure, as it prevents fraudsters from getting our personal information.
- MIUI Life – uses your location to find interesting places to visit and the best deals of food and movie tickets near you.
- Yellow Pages app – lets you find important phone numbers quickly.
Xiaomi now boasts of having over 5000 unique themes available for MIUI.
MIUI v6 is available to a small group of beta testers at the moment. However, users are assured this update will be available for recent devices such as the Mi 3 and Mi 4 smartphones in China. Good news for users outside of China who are willing to get their hands on Xiaomi’s unique products: Xiaomi plans on entering US markets in 2015.
