iPhone 6 Rumored To Have USB Cable That Could Be Inserted Either Ways
How many times do you try to insert the USB cable into the port before getting successful? And imagine the pain when you have to insert USB cable in the dark or in the back port of your CPU chassis. Apple feels the pain you experience in this task and is now believed to be providing a solution to this problem.
Apple filed a patent application last month about a reversible USB connector that could be inserted in either orientation. The patent noted that “USB plug connectors according to the present invention can have a 180 degree symmetrical, double orientation design, which enables the plug connector to be inserted into a corresponding receptacle connector in either of two intuitive orientations.”
This patent was originally filed back in January and suggested a “reversible Universal Serial Bus plug connector comprising: a body; a dielectric base; a shell extending from the body and having an opening at a first end that communicates with a cavity defined by four inner surfaces of the shell and the dielectric base.”
The goal of the proposed design of the USB connector is to reduce user frustration and avoid potential damage to the connectors as well as to the USB port.
A new standard for USB connectors was proposed earlier by USB Promoter Group, which governs USB standards. The standard was named ‘Type-C’ reversible USB plug that could be inserted either ways into the port. Since this type of connector required specialized port, it would not fit in current USB ports.
USB Promoter Group is also working on a universal cable that could be used to charge all of the devices instead of using different type of chargers for different devices.
However, Apple’s proposed design for the reversible USB connector is compatible with current as well as future USB ports on all devices.
Sonny Dickson — known for anticipating Apple’s releases, especially iPhones — recently tweeted this photo of reversible USB connector, on Lightning cable, that looks like could be coming along with iPhone 6.
Apple revealed its Lightning cable when iPhone 5 was announced. Lightning cable could be inserted either ways, but the customers had to purchase it. We hope this cable will be available along with every iPhone 6 in order to actually eliminate user frustration.
