Survey Shows Emerging Markets Prefer Big Screen Smartphones
Jana — a market research firm that connects emerging market consumers with global brands using mobile airtime — conducted a survey to find out what screen size consumers in emerging markets prefer. The survey concluded that most of the consumers in emerging markets prefer smartphones with a display that is at least five inches in size.
Jana conducted this survey in nine countries — Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Philippines, South Africa and Vietnam. The survey asked 1,386 consumers different questions like what screen size do they expect in their next smartphone, do they use an app to watch video content on their smartphone and some other questions.
All of the countries except Nigeria showed that 5-inch or bigger screens are preferred. While four to five inch screens are not favorable in emerging markets, 4-inch screens are still popular and are liked by the consumers. This may be because of the convenience and comfort that small phones provide.
In another question that asked why do they prefer this size of screen, consumers who favored 4-inch screens replied with remarks like “Easy to use in either hand,” “It’s easy to put in my pocket,” and “It is the most portable.” Consumers who favored screens bigger that 5-inches left these remarks: “Big screen is more fun to play games and watch YouTube,” “To view high definition while watching video” and “Good viewing mode to watch video.”
The reason behind favoring big screens is usually the high definition video experience that they provide. In emerging countries, smartphones are the main source of entertainment. From surfing the web to playing games and watching movies, smartphones come in handy.
The survey also asked the consumers whether they use an app to watch video content or not. Majority of the consumers in all these markets used apps to watch videos. 76 percent consumers in Mexico and 75 percent consumers in India replied with “Yes” to this question.
The fourth question of the survey was to find out what would make them watch more video content on their smartphone. Some of the answers that were received are: “Cheaper data, smaller video size,” “Streaming content running like a breeze on smartphones,” and “Big screen and sharper image.”
“Global data traffic is projected to grow 10x in the next five years, with 50% of traffic coming from video apps by 2019,” wrote Jana in the infographic.
Major smartphones manufacturers are already making big screen smartphones. Apple’s next release of iPhone, iPhone 6, is expected to have a bigger screen size than all of the previous versions. Google Nexus 6 is believed to have 5.9 inch screen while LG G3 already features a 5.5 inch screen.
