Microsoft’s New Service To Be Called Sway?
Microsoft has been seen registering new domains that use the term CDN. This may mean that they are working on a new content delivery network service or may be a service that will use CDN.
The news emerged one day after it was announced that Apple had turned on its own CDN. Apple has been working on building their own CDN for quite a time, and now they have finally come up with a solution. Although Apple will probably never completely knock out the involvement of third-party CDNs like Netflix did, this move will make them less reliant on third-party CDNs over time.
“Apple already controls the hardware, the OS (iOS/OS X) as well as the iTunes/App store platforms. Right now they control the entire customer experience, except for the way content is delivered to their devices, and they are quickly working to change that.” said Dan Rayburn from StreamingMedia.
Does Microsoft want more control just like Apple?
Microsoft has not officially announced anything about their new purchases of domains but Jamie Zoch at Dot Weekly was able to reveal these purchases using the Whois Record. According to the record, Microsoft has acquired Sway.com domain using Brand Certified, which is a domain name service.
Other variations of Sway.com like sway-CDN.com, sway-CDN.net, sway-INT.com and sway-INT.net also belong to Microsoft now. Currently, all of these domain names are redirected to a Bing page showing answers about sway. Microsoft has also acquired a trademark for ‘Sway’.
All of these purchases could mean that Microsoft is following in the footsteps of Apple and Netflix that have set an example by moving their content on to their own CDNs instead of relying on third-party CDNs. Using own CDN allows the company more control over their content and enables them to provide better user experience because they can interact directly with the users.
This could also mean that Microsoft is readying a new class of streaming services. Microsoft is already working on their own gaming streaming service as Twitch — currently embedded with Xbox — may be bought by Google for $1 billion.
Microsoft already has their own CDN so we can’t guess for sure what they are up to with this “Sway” thing. But one thing for sure is that since Microsoft is moving towards the cloud-first world, they will be needing more control over their services and hence needing their own CDN.
Sway could be a service for their customers, or it could be a service to better manage their applications. Only time will tell.
