Sony Finally Beats Nintendo In Console Sales
Well, it seems that Sony has finally dethroned Nintendo in console sales that was a challenge it had been struggling for the past eight years.
The main reason Sony was finally able to defeat Nintendo in the console sales arena was primarily due to the PS4 having a stronghold of the market. Whereas Nintendo’s Wii U failed to enthrall the console gaming community.
Nikkei, a Japanese news site, was the first to do the number crunching regarding facts and figures about the console sales, which Sony and Nintendo had already made available to the public separately.
The website reported that Sony boasted nearly 18.7 million game machines in the fiscal year which ended on March 31, where as Nintendo only managed to sell a mere 16.3 million units.
A few things can be concluded based on these facts and figures. First of, this is the first time Sony has claimed the top position after 2006 since Nintendo had been rampaging the console gaming market with the release of its popular House of Mario.
Secondly, this change of position also reflects how both the businesses have been affected.
The console gaming community all over the world has warmly embraced the PlayStation 4, whereas they have been rather unimpressed with the Nintendo’s Wii U.
Another interesting aspect which sheds some more light on the console sales is the comparison of the figure which accounts for the mix of sales. About 12.4 million or a majority of Nintendo’s console sales were generated thanks to its successful 3DS handheld division. Conversely, Sony managed to sell 14.6 million PS2, PS3, and PS4 consoles.
Another point to note is that the PS4 was available for sale publicly in November, and only accounts for four months worth of sales.
In the past, thanks to the PlayStation 2 Sony acquired the title for making the most popular games console of all time. Unfortunately, its over hyped PlayStation 3 failed to hit its mark as Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 gave it a run for its money.
Despite Sony’s latest gaming platform being received with zest among gamers, and it outselling the Xbox One once again in April, Sony and Nintendo are both facing a tough financial crisis. Both firms are expecting to lose money.
Previously, Nintendo had revealed that it was facing poor sales and wasn’t generating enough money. Whereas, Sony has said that it will lose nearly $489m this year.
Although, Sony has made a great accomplishment, it has still a lot to look forward to if it wants to maintain its lead.
